Announcement: This may be be a long class today. I will try very hard not to go past our "early release" time, but in case I do, please feel free to bring a snack or lunch to tide you over.
"The key to everything is patience. You get the chicken by hatching the egg - not by smashing it." (Ellen Glasgow, 1873-1945)
Essential Question: Is there any relationship between your personality and the type of classroom management strategies and procedures you will use?
TO PREPARE FOR OUR CLASS THIS WEEK, DO THE FOLLOWING:
1. Review PPT on Honing Your Presentational Skills:
2. Do several dry runs of your final project presentation. Practice, practice, practice!
3. CHECKING FOR UNDERSTANDING - CLASSROOM PROCEDURES: In order for your classroom to run smoothly, you need to establish some classroom procedures (routines). Procedures are NOT the same as classroom rules. Procedures are expected classroom behaviors with no set consequences for a violation, while rules are for behaviors that have set consequences. Look over the handouts below to get a feel for the types of procedures that you will need to consider. There is a lot to consider! Select FIVE procedures/routines and then think about how YOU might address them when you become a teacher. Type up your thoughts - i.e., how YOU might address these FIVE procedures/routines - (please understand, though, that when you become a teacher, you will need to establish many more than five procedures!).
An example of a routine might be how you will collect homework. As you know, I collect assignments via your student progress tracking folders. I would describe this procedure as follows:
Collecting Assignments: When students arrive at class, they are to get their student progress folders from a table at the front of the classroom, remove their graded work, and insert their work that is due into the folders. At the end of class, students are to place their folders in a rolling cart at the front of the class.
OPTIONAL: My daughter Erin, when she was a first-year teacher, created a PowerPoint presentation that she showed the very first day of class. It includes a Classroom Procedures section. She said that I could share it with you and that you are welcome to modify it and use it once you become a teacher. Feel free to look at it for ideas about classroom procedures. By the way, there are no right or wrong procedures. You have to develop procedures that work with your personality and needs and those of your students.
OPTIONAL: Here's another PowerPoint presentation I have on classroom management. Caveat: Although there is a lot of information on procedures, not everything in the PowerPoint deals with procedures.
4. JUST FOR FUN - What kind of teacher personality do you have?: Teachers have different classroom management styles that tend to be influenced by their personality types. Go to the following website: http://www.cbv.ns.ca/sstudies/gen3.html. Take the Classroom Management Profile Assessment, and take note of your classroom management style. Ask a few people who know you well whether or not the classroom management style seems reflective of who you are as a person and why they feel that way.
ASSIGNMENTS DUE THIS WEEK:
1. Checking for Understanding - Classroom Procedures (see #3 above).
2. Service Learning Contract (one/service learning teacher). If you have not started working with your service learning teacher, please turn in the service learning contract as soon as you start working with this person. service learning contract.pdf
3. Service Learning Evaluation (one/service learning teacher). If you have not completed service learning as yet, you won't be able to turn this document in today. As soon as you have finished service learning, please turn in this document.
4. Final Projects - Option 1 Classroom Management Final Projects Presentations and Rubric (and any remaining Option 2 Classroom Management Final Project Presentations). All students are to be present for all presentations!
Option 1 - Individual presentations about Junior Achievement and/or Service Learning Experiences. Each student will share his/her multimedia artifact during a 5-10 minute presentation. Their artifact will need to be saved on a CD or jump drive to submit to me for my evaluation. If you save your artifact on a CD or jump drive, place the artifact in an envelope or plastic bag with your name on it. If it’s more convenient, students can email me their presentation as an email attachment to ProfessorVerkler@aol.com. The presentation must be emailed to me prior to our class meeting. Make sure you bring your rubric with you to class.
